RICHMOND ~ IN THE UNITED STATES

Richmond ~ In The United States is a collection of narratives about more than 100 American communities, past and present, named “Richmond” (or “New Richmond,” “Richmond Hill,” “West Richmondville,” and so on). Most of them have been written by people who actually live and work in these communities – librarians, teachers, historians, town administrators, private citizens with long memories and/or deep roots.

The driving force behind this project is Gerald K. Waters, an entrepreneur and marketing professional from Richmond, Virginia. In early 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jerry began making phone calls – lots of them – to find just the right person to contribute a 1000-word narrative and a couple of pictures about each special Richmond.

Dr. Martha Turner came aboard later in 2020. A former English professor from Richmond, Vermont, Martha became the book’s copy editor and designated writer when local sources just weren’t available. She also took on graphic design duties for the project, creating the book’s page layouts and this website.

The result of this collaboration is a Richmond ~ In The United States, a book rich in history and local knowledge. Its 370 pages, including more than 180 historic and contemporary images, offer a panorama of American life and history as seen through the eyes and stories of people who have lived in the many American places called Richmond.
